Carmuther 100 contains Carmustine: what it is

Carmustine is a chemotherapy medicine that damages the DNA of cancer cells so they cannot divide. As an infusion it is used, alone or with other medicines, for certain brain tumors, multiple myeloma, and Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma that came back or did not respond. A wafer form (Gliadel) is placed in the brain during surgery for newly diagnosed high-grade glioma or glioblastoma that has come back.

What doctors prescribe it for

• Brain tumors such as glioblastoma, brainstem glioma, medulloblastoma, astrocytoma, ependymoma and cancer that has spread to the brain
• Multiple myeloma, together with prednisone
• Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin lymphoma that came back or did not respond, with other medicines
• Newly diagnosed high-grade glioma, as wafers placed during brain surgery and followed by radiation (Gliadel)
• Glioblastoma that has come back, as wafers placed during brain surgery (Gliadel)

How it is given

Infusion into a vein, given in a hospital or clinic; a wafer form is implanted in the brain during surgery

Storage

Vials kept refrigerated at 2-8 C; Gliadel wafers kept frozen at or below -20 C
